Summer Camp as a Summer Job

Summer Camp as a Summer Job pixabay.com Summer break is the perfect time to make some extra money without the schedule constraints of class. There are many different types of jobs that you can go for at many different skill levels. From retail jobs  and restaurant jobs to office work, many companies are willing to hire summer employees. If the thought of sitting in an office all day or working a deep frier for hours on end makes you antsy just to imagine, there is another great option for a summer job: summer camp counselor. Being a summer camp counselor is a great job for college students over their summer break. One of the biggest draws of working a summer camp is the active nature of the job. You get to spend your days outdoors playing and enjoying nature. It’s a great way to see a new part of the country and experience the wildlife in that area. Being a camp counselor can help you cultivate valuable leadership skills that will be applicable in any profession. Learning how to lead children is one of the best ways to get hands-on experience in fundamental leadership methods. Connecting with kids can also be an incredibly meaningful personal experience. The relationships you cultivate with other counselors is a great way to not only expand your network but create lasting friendships. If you are thinking about applying to be a summer camp counselor, here are some things to keep in mind. Be prepared for hard times Being a camp counselor can be hard. Don’t underestimate the difficulty of managing a bunch of seven-year-olds in a wide open space. If you are going to be a camp counselor, you have to be prepared to wear many different hats. You need to be able to straddle the line of friend and counselor. You should have genuine fun with your kids, but you also need to be able to lay some discipline on them if the opportunity warrants it. It’s not always frisbee and swimming; sometimes you have to step up and be their leader as well as a comforting figure for them to lean on. Become comfortable with teaching Being a camp counselor means being a friend to your kids, but it also means teaching them. Whether you’re teaching them a class about arts and crafts or teaching them about the local wildlife while on a hike, you will learn, and should be prepared to learn, how to help others learn. This is a skill that will prove valuable throughout your entire life. Whether you are looking to enter a profession that requires pure teaching or if you are entering a profession that will involve explaining your ideas and reasoning, being able to teach kids about things in simple terms will remain useful beyond the summer. Get ahead professionally Working as a camp counselor might just seem like a fun personal experience, but it will really help you as you move forward in your academic career and eventual profession. Communicating well with kids will help you communicate well with adults, which shines through in interviews, presentations, and any communal situation. You will gain incredible problem-solving skills that are necessary for caring for children that will translate well into any fast-moving environment. This is a huge draw for employers and will show through in your academic work as well. And of course, being a camp counselor means being a leader. Leading well and efficiently is one of the most important skills that you can have in your academic and professional life. If these features of being a camp counselor sound appealing to you, you should seriously consider applying for a position. The first step you will need to take is to research some camps and their application requirements and deadlines. Camp counselor positions are incredibly sought after and will often give priority to applicants who are also ex-campers, so it’s best to get your application in as early as possible. If you are an ex-camper looking to be a counselor at your old camp, research your camps application process for ex-campers as many places offer an early application process for old campers. If you aren’t an ex-camper, you still have a chance, but make sure you have a stellar resume and cover letter to show. If you are not familiar with what your resume and cover letters should contain for a counselor position, there are tons of templates that you can find online to help you out. While summer is far away, it’s never too early to think about what you are going to do to fill your time and make some money. Being a camp counselor is a great job for college students and one that everyone should at least consider.

6 Great Free Apps For Mac Laptops

6 Great Free Apps For Mac Laptops Photo Credit: thenextweb.com 1. Google Chrome While Apples go-to internet browser may be Safari, Google Chrome is the better option for Macs. Its free, clean, and lets you add third-party extensions to your browser, too. Bonus: you can change fonts, block certain names and sites from showing up on your Internet, and easily search Google with this browser. Chrome was one of my first downloads on my laptop and is my default browser and one of the best free apps you can get on your Mac. 2. VLC Media Player I personally use this player on my Mac and like it the best out of all the players you can use. Ive tried DivX and Apple gives you their DVD Player app  already installed on your laptop, but I find VLC to be the fastest and most able to play whatever file you want it to. Plus, its free to download and doesnt take up too much space on your laptop, making this one of the best free apps you can use on Macs, and a no-brainer to install and set as your default player. 3. OpenOffice Why pay for Microsoft Word or Office suite when you can download a free version of basically the same software? OpenOffice can open Word documents, PowerPoints, and Excel spreadsheets, plus you can create and save your files with those extension names (like .doc or .docx) so theyre also able to be opened by Microsoft Word owners. I never bought Microsoft Office for my laptop and instead downloaded OpenOffice and have used it for notes, projects, essays, etc. throughout college and never had a problem with it. So if you want to save some money but still want to be able to create documents such as you would in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice is definitely the best free app for that and worth installing. 4. Adium Id never heard of this app before but after doing some research into it, have decided its definitely one Ill be downloading. Basically, Adium is a communication app that unites all your chat accounts on one platform, from Gchat to Facebook Chat, so you can easily use and talk to multiple people from your various accounts. Adium also lets you add plugins and customize the app, from font style to speech bubble color, and you can download it to your desktop. Its efficient, convenient, and will let you cut down on the number of tabs you have opened, making chatting with friends and family much simpler, making this one of the best  free apps for Macs  and one you should check out. Photo Credit: caseorganic.com 5. SelfControl The name pretty much says it all; this app lets you easily block your own access to distracting websites for whatever period of time you designate. Its perfect for if you have a test you should be studying for but instead find yourself unable to stop reading BuzzFeed articles or scrolling through Twitter. SelfControl lets you put website URLs on a blacklist and then set a timer for how long you want to be locked out of those websites. Plus, its smart and wont let you try to circumvent it by using another browser, like Firefox or Safari, even if you set it for Google Chrome. For those of you who lack self control on your laptop, this is one of the best free apps that will help you focus on what you need to be doing. 6.  Dropbox or Google Drive These are both file-storing apps you can download or use for free and access from any device with Wi-Fi. Dropbox gives you 2.5 gigabytes of free storage space, and you can upgrade your account for a fee or earn 25 megabytes of extra storage for free by completing some tasks through the app. You can access Google Drive through your Gmail account or download it to your desktop to make backing up all your files easier. Physics of Oil - Calculating the Volume and Heat Transfer With a Caliper

Physics of Oil - Calculating the Volume and Heat Transfer With a CaliperAs with any new science, the 'Physics of Oil' is first being defined in terms of its practical application. In this case, that means analyzing oil to find out how it was produced and refined. Another key word here is 'physics.' Scientific studies in this area are often coupled with mathematical proof, but this is a topic for another article. The first step in studying oil is to measure it. Oil can be measured as one molecule or as a fraction, known as 'volumes.' It is important to know how to measure the oil itself. We will have to find ways to determine the volume accurately. The easiest way to do this is to use a caliper. It is best to measure the oil by mass. This will ensure that the measured volume is the oil. Then, that volume should be converted to volume with the unit of volumetric weight, which is a measure of the volume, by mass. The volume must be converted to moles, or grams, depending on whether the oi l is natural or synthetic. There are many oils available, each with different properties. Some are sweeter than others, some are heavier, and some are thinner. We must learn how to determine which oil is which. We need to learn how to use the mathematical equation of fractional proportion of a fraction of the oil. This is very simple to compute by learning the formula for its parts. This equation is related to the fact that oil behaves like a wave. If we know how to calculate the area of the wave, then we can understand how the oil behaves. The area of the wave is determined by the imaginary part of the wave. Because the volume of the wave is one-half its imaginary part, we can compute its volume from the volume. As we know that the volume of a wave can be given in terms of its height, we can compute the volume of the wave.Engineers who work with oil are usually petroleum engineers. These professionals are well-versed in the mechanics of the oil industry and they can help to determine what areas of oil are experiencing possible changes in their properties and their applications.

Start Your Career Early Leveraging Strengths as a Young Introvert in College - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / Start Your Career Early Leveraging Strengths as a Young Introvert in College - Introvert Whisperer Start Your Career Early: Leveraging Strengths as a Young Introvert in College Every culture seems to develop a preference for several specific traits. While one culture worships thin, trim or athletic bodies, another favors the curvier, more robust ones. The same is true with introversion and extroversion. Asian cultures prefer the quiet, contained mannerisms of an introvert, American culture seems to reward loud, outgoing, extroverted personalities. If you are an introvert, you can move to Asia where your innate characteristics are more preferred. Or, you can also learn how to use your strengths to their best advantage right here in the good old U.S. of A. Knowing yourself is one of the first steps to achieving success. Without knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are, you cant leverage any of them. While many college programs and events such as mixers, meet-and-greets, and other networking opportunities gear more towards extroverts, that doesnt mean introverts cant be as successful at networking. They might have to be more strategic in how they do it. Here are 3 ways for introverted college students to leverage their strengths and jump-start their career. It’s Not Scary If It’s Systematic Networking is an extroverted way of relating to the world, based on quantity over quality. The theory is that the more people you know, the stronger your network is. Yet, introverts have a great capacity for developing deeper and more intimate relationships. This is a strength they can use to their advantage. While networking events can be important, they are not the preferred environment of introverts. Nothing says networking events are the only places you can cultivate contacts. In fact, introverts may do far better doing research and setting up appointments with a few strategic prospects rather than trying to press the flesh with the masses. When you set your goal related to building career-focused connections, you will come closer to knowing your next steps. Make a plan of how many people you need to meet and in what areas. Are those senior students in your field, or you want to connect with a few key professors? Do you want to meet three persons working in a certain company? What can a certain person do for your career? Develop a strategy and put in on paper on in a sheet. You can organize your list by importance to know where to start.   Think about how to connect with those people and where. Prepare a speech or questions and then make your strategic move approach an individual in person or online. Remember that the business world is full of introverts like you. When you go to that next networking event, instead of trying to dive into the center of the action like the extroverts do, try skirting the edges of the room to find people like you. Look for the outliers and strike up a conversation. The likelihood is, you may find a kindred soul who can open several other doors for you. Sometimes, its not about how many people you know, but about knowing the right people. The chances are on your side. Its more likely that you will impress the influential introvert than some loud, chattering extrovert. Leverage Written Communication Introverts tend to prefer to think before they act or speak, so they enjoy written communication. Since this is what they prefer they can often be far more eloquent in an e-mail or letter that they might be in person. This is another skill that introverts can use to their advantage. Extroverts often prefer cold calling because they are better on their feet. Introverts can use emails, social media, and even hand-written letters to stand out from the crowd. Letters, in particular, are one great way to set yourself apart from the hundreds of emails that most busy or influential people get every day. While you will have to meet people face-to-face at some time, you will often do better preparing in advance for your actions. Blogging is another great way for introverts to establish their professional presence. Blogs are a great way for you to show off your knowledge and establish yourself as an authority without having to vie for public attention. Introverts are naturally creative, so a blog might be right up your alley. Good Listening Skills Can Go a Long Way Introverts are not only known for being good listeners, but they also notice and remember small details better. This can go a long way in building and establishing better relationships. A college is a vibrant place where meeting new people often happens naturally and spontaneously. You are always surrounded by people. You are all here to acquire education that will jumpstart your career. If you want to bond with your roommate or colleague but don’t know how, a bit of online research can help you find common interests to can talk about. People like people that show interest in them and often return the favor in the same fashion. Even the most powerful and influential people are still people. They want to be seen and known as much for who they are as for what they can do. We will all do things more likely for those we somehow connect to than for complete strangers. You are most likely trying to create a connection because you want something. There is nothing wrong with that. The person you are trying to connect with wants something too. You may want a good job and they may want a good employee. You may want a mentor and they may want an eager mentee. Wrapping It Up There is nothing wrong with wanting things from the people we interact with. The point is to find the places where your needs and wants align. This is one of many ways in which an introverts listening skills can stand them in good stead. Remember to use your listening skills and keep attention to detail when connecting with people. This introverted skill doesnt mean that extroverts do not know how to establish a connection or are shallow. Introverts have a unique set of strengths they can use to achieve their career-focused goals, as extroverts can harness theirs. In networking, introverts dont have to be left out in the cold. In fact, introverts will often do far better by abandoning the traditional networking playbook and striking out on their own to apply their unique strengths to build a strong, powerful network of support. Les Misérables

Les Misérables The Grace of Redemption: Les Misérables ChaptersThe Misérables StoryProduction NotesThe Most Evocative SongsRecognition of Les MiserablesCreating an engaging musical from classic literary works is nothing new. From that perspective, the stage show based on the work of French poet and novelist Victor Hugo is but one of many musicals. It is a complex story with many elements â€" drama and humour, tragedy and romance… plot twists and parallel lines that make it seem nearly impossible to condense the entire story into a couple of hours and a few songs. The classic novel, though written in the Romantic period when passionate stories fairly littered the literary landscape, was initially not considered for staging by English show writers… that is, until the gift of a music album. The French composing team of Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil had put together an album of songs for their adaptation of Les Misérables, which graced a Paris stage for only three months, in 1980.The initial leap from written word to musical w as that concept album, from which the show derived â€" a complete reversal of the normal order of things. Usually, the show comes first and, based on popular demand, recordings follow. The English-speaking world might not have ever experienced Les Misérables had it not been for stage director Peter Farago gifting producer Cameron Mackintosh the French concept album.Mr Mackintosh, riding the wave of success derived from Cats opening on Broadway, was initially reluctant to embrace Mr Farago’s idea of creating an English adaptation of the French show.Aren’t we all so glad he changed his mind!Your Superprof now transports you back in time to pre-revolutionary France, to a time when a man could be convicted to life in prison for petty theft and women were in turn victimized and stigmatized. As a condition of his release, he must display the yellow ticket that proclaims him an ex-convict everywhere he goes. That visual leaves him shunned by the public and turned away from respectable employment. No decent lodging house will give him room. He finally finds relief from a Bishop who feeds him and shelters him in the church.Jean Valjean, formerly 24601, is embittered by the treatment he receives from society at large and concludes that if he will be treated as a criminal, he must become one to survive. He takes a few silver pieces â€" a chalice and a platter from the church and steals away in the night. When caught, a scruffy, emaciated figure with such riches in his bag, he is auto matically suspect but, upon being dragged to the church by the police, instead of being denounced by the bishop, he is not only validated but rewarded. That redemptive act changes Valjean. When next we see him, he is prosperous and respected. He has cast away the yellow card that indicted him and changed his name, a clear violation of his parole which puts Javert hot on his heels.Even though they now live in the same city, Javert does not recognise Valjean, now cloaked in respectability and fashionable clothing. Instead, a wretched figure thought to be Valjean is arrested. The former prisoner realises this case of mistaken identity could be his ticket to permanently casting away the shadow of suspicion against him but cannot bear the thought of an innocent man being sent to prison in his place. He confesses his identity to Javert but pleads for time to arrange his affairs and those of Fantine, the gravely ill woman whose child will soon be orphaned. The two fight; Valjean then runs away .When he discovers the conditions the child Cosette is kept in and how she is treated, he takes the girl and raises her himself… at a cost, of course. All at once he visualised all of the story’s characters, even the seemingly secondary ones such as Marius and Eponine onstage, laughing, singing, crying. He could hardly wait to discuss his idea with composer Claude-Michel. They engaged in a lengthy discussion of character analysis â€" their mental and emotional state and the effect they would have on the audience. They also factored in the political and social climate of the story's era, along with any commentary or remarks that Mr Hugo himself might have made that he had compiled in his source novel. The part of the story when Valjean rescues the prostitute from the an gry client comes directly from Mr Hugo’s experience. He had been on his way to his editor’s office, a respected, quasi-famous citizen, when he saw that very scene play out before him: the rejected customer shoving a handful of snow down the woman’s dress and then pushing her to the ground. She raised her fists to defend herself and the man called for a policeman to charge her with assault. Mr Hugo, having witnessed the whole thing, intervened on her behalf. She became his Fantine and the scene was included in the story and the show.Once Messrs Boublil and Schonberg decided on the particulars, the latter composed the music as each set of lyrics was completed. When the entire work was done, Mr Schonberg sang the entire show, accompanying himself on the piano. Les Mis, as it is known in English-speaking theatre circles, has picked awards up as though hoovering. The West End production picked up the Audience Award for Most Popular Show and Patti LuPone won the Best Actress award for her role as Fantine. It was also nominated in several other categories. The original Broadway show earned multiple Tony Awards: best musical, best book, best score; best actor, best actress, best direction and it even took a Tony Award for best lighting design! That might have something to do with the show’s creative team tightening up production during the move from London to New York; one of the aspects they tweaked was the lighting in the sewers, to make it more dramatic. So beloved is this testimony of the human spirit that, since its opening night in London in 1985, it has run continuously â€" only closing in July 2019.Likewise, it holds the record for the second-longest running show on Broadway.Les Misérables has twice been made into film, has set (and broken) box office records for ticket sales and, according to Playbill, the Les Mis Original Broadway Cast recording is the second most popular cast recording of all time.It beat The Phantom of the Opera to take that spot…Whether you have a thing for revolutionaries or the French Revolution was never your thing, there is no doubt you will find something (everything!) to like about Les Misérables. Now read all about the new Broadway sensation, Hamilton.
